In the era of the Communist Soviet Union, Islam in Turkmenistan was under heavy pressure, its teachings were castrated and muzzled, many mosques were torn down and Islamic culture was eliminated. After the Soviet Union collapsed, Muslims in Turkmenistan were able to breathe.
So since 1990, efforts have been made to regain some of the cultural heritage lost under Soviet rule. President Saparmurat Niyazov has ordered that basic Islamic principles will be taught in public schools. Further religious institutions, including religious schools and mosques, have emerged, many with support from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Turkey. Religion classes are held in schools and mosques, with instruction in Arabic, the Qur'an and hadith, and Islamic history.

According to a Pew Research Center report in 2009, 93.1% of Turkmenistan's population is Muslim. Traditionally, Turkmen of Turkmenistan, like their relatives in Uzbekistan and Afghanistan, are Sunni Muslims. Shia Muslim branches are not numerous in Turkmenistan, and the Shia religious practices of the Azerbaijani and Kurdish minorities are not politicized. Most Turkmen readily identify themselves as Muslims and recognize Islam as an integral part of their cultural heritage, but some support the status of religious revival primarily as an element of national revival.
