A Heat Recovery Wheel (HRW), also known as an energy recovery wheel or rotary heat exchanger, is a critical component in a Fresh Air Handling Unit (FAHU) used to recover energy from the exhaust air and transfer it to the incoming fresh air. This process significantly improves the energy efficiency of HVAC systems by reducing the load on heating or cooling units.
The HRW is typically made of a rotating wheel coated with a desiccant material that helps transfer both sensible (temperature) and latent (moisture) energy between air streams. As the wheel rotates between the exhaust and fresh air streams, it absorbs heat and moisture from the outgoing air and transfers it to the incoming air, or vice versa, depending on the season. In winter, it preheats the cold incoming air, reducing the energy needed to heat the space, and in summer, it pre-cools and dehumidifies the incoming air, reducing the cooling load.
The HRW operates continuously as long as the FAHU is functioning, promoting energy savings, improving indoor air quality, and enhancing the overall performance of the HVAC system. It is particularly useful in buildings with high ventilation requirements, such as hospitals, offices, and commercial spaces.
