Cucumbers are extremely popular with gardeners and might be second to only tomatoes. They're so refreshing and way better tasting than what you get at the store. There are many kinds of cucumbers, and there are a lot of different ways you can grow them too.
One of my favorite ways to grow them is using the low and lean method. It's a commercial system that any backyard gardener can use. It's cheap, simple, and effective. By staking or clipping string, your plant has a guide to make its way upward as it grows. Just keep it in line with clips, and you'll have easy access for pruning and harvesting. It keeps everything so nicely organized, and you just go from the bottom to the top.
Let's talk a little bit more about the pruning side of things. With cucumbers, you want to prune to have one leader: one central stalk. You remove the suckers in the same way you do with tomatoes to keep the plant's energy focused.
As gardeners, our goal is to harvest fruit. We can guide our plants to do so effectively by removing "distractions" that will use up energy that could otherwise go towards developing the cucumbers. It's like staying on one road instead of taking lots of turnoffs.
A common question about the low and lean system come into play after the plant has been growing for a month or two: what do I do when the plant reaches the top? Here comes the name of the system. Clip your plant at its top. Once it's secure, unravel some string so your plant can lean over similar to how a snake coils. You want to keep leaves off the ground, but you should have a bare stalk at that point.
So what if you don't want - or just forget - to prune? It's not the end of the world. With more foliage, you can sometimes lose cucumbers behind leaves and find them after they're really mature. With some plants, that's okay. With cucumbers, we really like to harvest them at the optimal time because the seeds will develop, and the inside can get tough and fibrous. If you have grown luffa, you are familiar with how these plants can get.
Cucumber growing advice:
1. Warm-season
2. Full sun
3. Water at the base
4. Mulch heavily
5. Add compost
