In Genesis 21:22–34, Abimelech and his commander Phicol approach Abraham, recognizing that God is with him in everything he does. They ask him to swear an oath of honesty and loyalty.
Abraham agrees, but he also confronts Abimelech about a seized well. After discussing the matter, the two men establish a covenant of peace, sealed with the gift of seven ewe lambs as a witness that Abraham had dug the well.
The place is named Beer-sheba, meaning “Well of the Oath.”
Abraham plants a tamarisk tree there and calls upon the name of the LORD, God the Eternal, dwelling in the land of the Philistines for many years.
This passage reminds us of the importance of integrity, peaceful resolution of conflict, and acknowledging God’s presence in all we do.
