Turul ~ The Mystical Hungarian Mythological Bird

In today's video, I will be discussing the "Turul" or the Mystical Hungarian Mythological Bird.

The precise origins of the myth are largely from an unknown source. But one of the previous republications of the myth comes from the Chroncicum Pictum of the 12th Century from the notary and chronicler Bela III. This was a time when the Magyars conquered the trans-Carparth mountains in 860-870 AD and Emese, the wife of Ukyek would be given a vision of a birth of a new nation.

Linguistically, the "Turul" would be traced back to Turkish influences in the regions, notably tribes like the Kabars and the Pechenegs. The word "Turul" derives from "Togrul" or "Tugrul" which refers to the gyrafalcon.

Emese, dreamt of a falcon or eagle which soared through the sky and into the clouds and then desceneded upon her womb. Her womb would then give birth to a river. The turul promising to guard Hungary and give birth to a new nation would carry a sword of fire with it in its talons.

"Long live the Hungarians, lever let them fall!
The turul bird guards its nation and defends them from all".
