While it's useful to think of Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador as the Northern Triangle, "they're also very different from one another," explains Michael Shifter, former President of the Inter-American Dialogue. "Honduras probably is a country where it's experiencing the greatest degree of drug trafficking...El Salvador...is largely a gang violence country. There are some drugs as well that are related to that. There's some organized crime that's drug-related. But it also has different aspects to it. It's not just drug-related...And Guatemala as well, I think there's also a combination, there's a lot of drug trafficking in northern part of Guatemala. And again, traffickers take advantage of ungoverned spaces, which are vast...The gangs that are particularly successful, successful in their own terms are ones that are in El Salvador. And...The origin of those gangs goes back to Los Angeles."
