For Britain, the nationalization of Iran’s oil was a policy dispute, a blow to its national pride. Already reeling from the economic and human costs of the World War 2, Britain viewed Mosaddegh’s policy as an attempt to humiliate and sabotage its recovery. To enforce its position, Britain implemented a naval blockade, ensuring that no vessel from any country could export Iranian oil. European companies doing business in Iran were warned to evacuate immediately or face retribution. Inevitably, the Iranian economy began to falter.
