That ambiguity matters for the Indo-Pacific: economic incentives (trade deals) could tempt great-power transactionalism, but history and current policy signals make it unlikely the U.S. would wholesale trade away core security guarantees to allies — instead expect calibrated diplomacy, sustained deterrence measures, and hedging. Finally, New Delhi and Tokyo’s “Special Strategic and Global Partnership” gives them practical tools—deeper defense cooperation, resilient supply-chain projects, and coordinated diplomacy—to protect shared interests (maritime security, infrastructure resilience, and balancing coercion), so coordinated military-diplomatic steps and joint economic-security initiatives are the sensible route for preserving stability in the face of Chinese pressure.
