This is it—the flight every Part 61 private pilot applicant dreams (and stresses) about: the required long solo cross-country! Under FAA 14 CFR §61.109, this means one solo cross-country flight of at least 150 nautical miles total distance, with full-stop landings at three points, and one straight-line segment of more than 50 NM between takeoff and landing locations.
(Plus, it counts toward the 5 hours of solo XC and the tower-controlled airport landings needed for your license.)
I flew the beautiful Piper Cherokee 180 "Goldfinch" from my home base at 7F3 Caddo Mills Municipal to:
KOSA Mt Pleasant Regional
KTYR Tyler Pounds Regional (a towered airport—nailed those pattern entries and communications!)
Back home to 7F3 Caddo Mills
The route delivered solid distance, real navigation challenges, multiple full-stop landings, tower interactions, and that incredible feeling of being pilot in command for hours over East Texas. Planning was key—weather checks, NOTAMs, weight & balance—and execution felt smooth with great visibility and cooperative winds.
This flight was a huge milestone on my path to the Private Pilot License. If you're grinding through your own Part 61 requirements, THIS is the FUN one! Delays happen, but crossing it off the list? Unreal satisfaction!
Shoutout to my instructor, Cody Carver, for the sign-off and to everyone following along—your support keeps me motivated!
