📘 Arabic Shadda, Short Vowels, and Tanween – Explained Clearly
🔹 What is the Shadda ( ّ )?
The Shadda is a symbol placed above a letter and it means that the letter is doubled.
It is pronounced as two letters:
The first one is sukoon (silent)
The second one carries the vowel (fatḥa / ḍamma / kasra)
Example:
مُحَمَّد is pronounced: mu-ḥam-mad (m + m).
🔹 The Three Short Vowels
1. Fatḥa ( َ )
A small diagonal mark above the letter.
Pronounced like “a” in cat → بَ (ba).
2. Ḍamma ( ُ )
A small curl above the letter.
Pronounced like “u” in put → بُ (bu).
3. Kasra ( ِ )
A small diagonal mark under the letter.
Pronounced like “i” in sit → بِ (bi).
🔹 Shadda with Vowels
When the shadda comes with a vowel, the vowel belongs to the second of the doubled letters:
Shadda + Fatḥa → بَّ = b + ba
Shadda + Ḍamma → بُّ = b + bu
Shadda + Kasra → بِّ = b + bi
🔹 What is Tanween?
Tanween is an added “n” sound at the end of a noun.
It is written as double vowels, but pronounced with a noon sound (n).
1. Tanween Fatḥ ( ً )
Pronounced: an
Example: kitāban → كتابًا
2. Tanween Ḍamm ( ٌ )
Pronounced: un
Example: ṭālibun → طالبٌ
3. Tanween Kasr ( ٍ )
Pronounced: in
Example: qalamٍ → قلمٍ
🔹 Summary
Shadda = the letter is doubled (first silent + second with a vowel).
Short vowels: fatḥa (a), ḍamma (u), kasra (i).
Tanween = an extra n sound at the end of nouns (an / un / in).
