In this episode of Coffee Time with Carlos Machado, Carlos sits down with martial arts pioneer Ray Thompson — founder of Upstate Karate, lifelong martial artist, and father and longtime coach of UFC star Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson.
What begins as a casual conversation quickly turns into an incredible journey through martial arts history, old-school dojo stories, family legacy, and the mindset that helped build one of the most respected martial arts families in the world.
Ray shares how his martial arts journey began in 1974, inspired by Elvis Presley movies and a karate instructor who started teaching classes at Ray’s military school. What started as curiosity quickly turned into a lifelong passion that would eventually shape his family, his career, and the lives of thousands of students.
Two martial arts pioneers dive deep into the early days of martial arts in America — a time when styles were still evolving and dojo challenges were not uncommon. Ray recounts a wild story about a surprise challenge at his dojo that turned into a brutal sparring match, and how he later discovered the real reason behind the confrontation years later.
One of the most unforgettable moments of the episode is Ray’s story about competing in a 1980 “Tough Man Contest.” These events were raw, chaotic, and often had almost no rules. Fighters could face opponents of any size and experience level. Ray entered the event with almost no preparation and found himself battling multiple opponents in one weekend — including a massive 240-pound competitor. His storytelling brings listeners right into the moment — from the nerves before stepping into the ring to the lessons learned through adversity.
The conversation then shifts to something even bigger than fighting: legacy.
The discussion also touches on parenting in the modern world. With social media, technology, and endless distractions, Ray explains why martial arts can play such an important role in helping young people build confidence, discipline, and purpose.
Of course, the conversation eventually turns to Ray’s children — including Carlos’s wife Lindsay Machado, who also competed in kickboxing — and the incredible fighting journey of Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson, a 57-0 Kickboxing champion and UFC title challenger.
Ray reveals how Stephen’s career started in kickboxing, where he compiled an incredible 57-0 record with 39 knockouts before transitioning to mixed martial arts. He also tells the story behind the origin of the famous nickname “Wonderboy,” which was born during a fight interview after one of Stephen’s earliest dominant performances.
Throughout the episode, Carlos and Ray share laughter, wisdom, and powerful reflections about martial arts, family, and the importance of building something meaningful that lasts beyond competition. A 2-hour look into a friendship spanning nearly 30 years.
Grab a coffee and enjoy this inspiring conversation with one of the great mentors behind a legendary martial arts family.
