In this question, we’ve been asked to find the estimated mean of a set of grouped data.
Key Steps
1. Identify midpoints (x)
2. Calculate fx
3. Find the totals
4. Apply the estimated mean formula
Key Points
1. Estimated Mean Calculation: A four-step process: find mid-interval values, multiply by frequencies, sum the products, and divide by the total frequency.
2. Mid-Interval Values: Calculated as the average of the upper and lower bounds of each group (e.g., for the 10-20 cm group, the mid-interval value is 15).
3. Frequency Multiplication: Each mid-interval value is multiplied by its corresponding frequency to get the product (fx).
4. Sum of Frequency: 30 days.
5. Sum of Product of Frequency and Mid-Interval Values: 570.
6. Estimated Mean: 19 centimetres.
Key Skills
1. Midpoint Logic: Understanding that the middle of a range is the best "guess" for unknown data.
2. Table Management: Keeping data organized in columns to avoid arithmetic errors.
3. Division by Total Frequency: Remembering to divide by the number of days (30), not the number of groups (5).
