Pastor Troy Drake tackles one of the most important — and most misunderstood — topics in the Christian life: the baptism of the Holy Spirit. In Acts 19, Paul arrives in Ephesus and encounters a group of disciples who believe in God but are missing something. His question to them is the same question Pastor Troy asks us today: "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?"
Walking carefully through the text and supporting scriptures, Pastor Troy distinguishes between the Holy Spirit being with us, in us, and upon us — three biblical prepositions that describe three different aspects of the Spirit's work. He makes the case from scripture that the empowering of the Holy Spirit for ministry is a separate experience from salvation, that it's available to every believer, and that all you have to do is ask. This is a message that challenges every Christian to go deeper and not settle for ankle-deep faith when God wants to take you downstream.
Key Scriptures:
Acts 19:1-10 (NKJV)
John 14:17 — "He dwells with you and will be in you."
Acts 1:8 — "You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you."
Luke 11:13 — "How much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him."
Matthew 3:11 — John the Baptist: "He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire."
Romans 10:10 — "With the heart one believes unto righteousness."
1 Corinthians 12 — Not all have the same gifts.
1 Corinthians 14 — "Do not forbid speaking in tongues."
Romans 6 — Baptism symbolizes death, burial, and resurrection with Christ.
Three Aspects of the Spirit's Work:
The Clarity of the Spirit — Paul encounters disciples in Ephesus who believe but have never heard of the Holy Spirit. He provides clarity about who the Spirit is and what water baptism in Jesus' name means. These believers are then baptized properly (vv. 1-5).
The Influence of the Spirit — Paul lays hands on them and the Holy Spirit comes upon them. This is the baptism of the Holy Spirit — a separate empowering from conversion — resulting in the exercise of spiritual gifts including tongues and prophecy (vv. 6-7).
The Work of the Spirit — Empowered by the Spirit, Paul reasons and persuades in the synagogue for three months, then teaches daily in the school of Tyrannus for two years until the entire region of Asia hears the gospel (vv. 8-10).
Three Prepositions of the Holy Spirit:
With you (Greek: para) — The Spirit draws near, guides, and convicts
In you (Greek: en) — The indwelling Spirit at conversion — every believer has this
Upon you (Greek: epi) — The baptism of the Spirit for power and ministry
What This Does NOT Mean:
You are not unsaved if you haven't been baptized in the Spirit — salvation is by faith in Jesus alone
You do not have to speak in tongues to prove you've received the Spirit — God determines who gets which gifts
The Holy Spirit is not weird — people are weird. Misuse doesn't invalidate proper use.
Key Takeaways:
God always wants you to go deeper with Him than you are right now
The baptism of the Spirit is for power to serve and witness — it's about directed service, not salvation
You don't need to be a special kind of Christian — Jesus said all you have to do is ask
Paul's effectiveness in Ephesus came from operating in the power of the Spirit
In two years, all of Asia heard the word of the Lord because Spirit-empowered believers carried it everywhere
