More than two centuries after steam engines powered the Industrial Revolution, steam is making a surprising comeback — this time in orbit.

A new generation of space propulsion systems is using water-based steam thrusters to manoeuvre small satellites, offering a simpler, cheaper, and more sustainable alternative to traditional chemical propulsion.

UK-based startup SteamJet Space Systems is leading this innovation with its compact “TunaCan Thruster” — a device small enough to fit on a CubeSat, yet powerful enough to extend a satellite’s operational life by years. Using just 130 grams of water, the system heats it into steam and expels it to generate thrust — essentially acting like a “space kettle.”

As the number of small satellites in orbit continues to surge, efficient propulsion is becoming critical. Satellites must be able to adjust their position, avoid collisions, and maintain orbit — especially in increasingly crowded low-Earth orbit.

Steam propulsion offers key advantages:

▶️ Safer handling and storage
▶️ Environmentally friendly operation
▶️ Compact design that preserves payload space

Already, seven steam thrusters are operating in orbit, with more planned — including a mission aboard NASA’s Artemis II in 2026.

As space becomes more congested and commercial activity accelerates, this seemingly old technology could play a major role in shaping the future of satellite operations — proving that sometimes, the next big leap forward starts with ideas from the past.
