Last week, the chief of the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS), a Hindu nationalist party with close ties to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), asked couples to have three children each in order to save Indian society from extinction. In recent months, leaders of states in southern India have also asked people to have more children. So, why this sudden call for Indians to reproduce more? We explain.
