Suez canal was blocked for around seven days when EverGiven, a 1300 foot ship of 2,20,000 ton capacity was stuck in one of the busiest canals of the world connecting the European and Mediterranean ports to the South East Asia & China and Oceania.
A dust storm where wind speeds had reached 30 knots or 55.56 kilometers per hour had caused the ship to deviate from its course in a suspected cause of the mishap.
The ship choking the canal had been blocking billions of dollars’ worth of cargo from crossing one of the world’s busiest marine waterways. Insurers, the shipping industry and the thousands of businesses reliant on container goods are still counting the cost of the accident as they awaited the go-ahead for more than 367 vessels who were trapped around the canal.
According to Lloyd's List data, the ship's grounding had been holding up some $9.6 billion worth of cargo each day between Asia and Europe.
Chairman of Suez canal authority had estimated that Egypt’s loss was at around $12-14 million in revenue from the canal for each day it being closed.
The EverGiven ship is listed & operated by the Taiwanese shipping & container transportation company, Evergreen Marine corporation, headquartered in Luzhu district. The ship is owned by Japan-based Shoei Kisen Kaisha. A representative of Shoei Kisen Kaisha had confirmed on Monday about the refloat operation.
The Taiwanese company, Evergreen marine, which is one of the largest shippers in the world by cargo carrying capacity, also said that it will ask Shoei Kisen Kaisha to bear responsibility for the mishap that has blocked billions of dollars’ worth of cargo.
EverGiven would be inspected for seaworthiness after the refloat as stated by Evergreen marine company. Once the EverGiven is inspected in Great Bitter Lake, Egypt, officials will decide whether the Panama-flagged, Japanese-owned ship, hauling goods from Asia to Europe, can continue to its original destination of Rotterdam, or if it will need to enter another port for repairs.
Evergreen Marine had previously said on March 24 that they had “urged the shipowner to investigate the cause of this accident” and work closely with the Suez Canal Authority to “refloat the stranded ship as soon as possible.”
The ship which had blocked the traffic on Suez canal was dislodged and floated back using help from multiple sources.
Inchcape, a global provider of marine services said that the 400-metre long Evergiven ship was successfully re-floated at 4.30 am local time (0230 GMT) and was being secured.
Dutch salvaging firm Boskalis was hired to assist in the process of salvaging. The CEO of the Dutch firm said that 30,000 cubic metres of sand had been dredged to help free the vessel, which had been pulled free using 14 tugboats.
Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority (SCA), Osama Rabie, told a news conference that 9,000 tonnes of ballast water, which is stored in tanks to stabilize the ship had to be removed to help lighten the vessel.
Satellite data from MarineTraffic.com confirmed that the ship was moving away from the shoreline towards the centre of the canal.
Workers in the refloat operation were aided by high tides helped by a full moon. Changing tides were indeed a problem in salvaging the situation for the ship apart from many human errors.
The full moon offers a spring tide in which high tides are higher, & the low tides are lower because of the effects of gravity during a straight-line alignment of the Earth, the moon and the Sun. The full-moon high tide helped in refloating the ship as the water level rose.
The news of the cargo-ship EverGiven been salvaged and refloated caused the oil prices to drop and stocks to rise boosting the Asian markets.
It would also bring respite to British businesses who use the canal or that ship for trade purposes, for example Seaport freight services.
The Seaport Freight Services, a shipping and freight-forwarding company based at the Port of Felixstowe, Suffolk, England had 20 containers of goods stranded on the Evergiven.
Now, after the ship has been refloated, trade and goods flow on the route will head towards normalization.
