We start by connecting to R1 via console cable and exploring the different CLI modes.

I walk through User EXEC mode where you're limited to basic commands, then Privileged EXEC mode where you get access to show running-config and other diagnostic commands, then into Global Configuration mode where the real work happens. You'll see how the prompt changes at each level so you always know where you are.

For the actual configuration, we set up hostnames, message-of-the-day banners, enable secrets, and console/VTY passwords. I explain why enable secret is preferred over enable password (MD5 hashing versus the weak Type 7 encryption). We then configure the GigabitEthernet interfaces with IP addresses and descriptions, making sure to issue no shutdown since router interfaces are administratively down by default.

The topology has two routers connected via a /30 point-to-point link, each with a LAN segment containing a switch and two PCs. We configure static routes so the networks can communicate end-to-end, then verify everything works with ping and show commands.

I demonstrate the full configuration on R1 and SW1 - you'll apply the same process to R2 and SW2 using the lab guide.
