Is Matjaki getting better or what?!? Those who have been following my videos would have seen Matjaki showcased here previously alongside other greats such as his younger brother Adam Marrilaga and brother-in-law Larry Winiwini.
Here, Matjaki he plays a yirdaki made by Dhapa Ganambarr, a gun of a yirdaki player himself and an emerging artist who is starting to make a name for himself.
This yirdaki kicks arse. It has the rare 'howling' quality that comes with just the right bore configuration... the exaggerated taper (compare 3 cm at the mouthpiece to up to 13 cm at the bell!) gives this stick tremendous power, back pressure and loudness, yet the openness in the throat region gives a wonderful acoustic balance and not a more whiny response if it were more constricted. A nuanced, character-rich voice is the result of deep convolutions in the bore. And that thumping bass! Doesn't sound like a F fundamental to me, but that's what my tuner tells me, F fundamental and F# overtone.
This is among the top 5 instruments I collected whilst away during an extended Arnhem Land visit.
