This is an informal chat with Pandit Sharda Sahai to discuss Tal. Because it is about "time" we met at the 'River Isis' - which is the name for the River Thames in Oxford. There is a sign language (tali - khali) demonstrated by hand gestures which tells what time we are using for music. There are also different sign languages for the different paths (theka) a rhythm can take in the same time signature. How slow can time be? How fast can time be? This is a wonderful discussion and the actual Tintal which is the 16 beat time cycle is taught later on in a future section - so watch this space!
Featuring the tabla virtuoso Pandit Sharda Sahai.
I have adapted the original 1998 Play Tabla video into 15 mini-videos, assisted by Conrad Weiskrantz. This mini-video is one of them.
Narrative by: Caroline Howard-Jones, script writer and director of Play Tabla.
