Discover the breathtaking beauty of the Peak District in late summer, when the hills and moorlands are transformed into a sea of vibrant purple heather. From the stunning panoramas at Surprise View to the dramatic cliffs of Millstone Edge and the majestic summit of Mother Cap, this area offers unforgettable vistas, rich history, and abundant wildlife. Whether you’re a nature lover, hiker, or photographer, the heather in bloom is a spectacle not to be missed.
Not everything blooming on the moors right now is heather.
🌿 Heather (Calluna vulgaris)
Color: Shades of purple to lilac (sometimes pale pinkish).
Season: Late July – early September (peak now).
Habitat: Large carpets across the moorland.
🌼 Other Flowers You Likely Saw
Yellow
Dwarf Gorse (Ulex minor) or Western Gorse (Ulex gallii) – low spiky bushes with golden-yellow pea-like flowers.
Bird’s-foot Trefoil – smaller yellow flowers scattered near paths.
Orange / Yellow-Orange
Hawkweed (Hieracium species) – dandelion-like flowers, often orange or deep yellow, scattered among the heather.
Pink (brighter than heather)
Bell Heather (Erica cinerea) – deeper magenta-pink flowers, grows alongside ling heather.
Sometimes Cross-leaved Heath (Erica tetralix) – softer pink, usually in wetter spots.
✅ So:
The purple blanket is mainly Ling Heather (Calluna vulgaris).
The bright yellow, orange, and hot pink blooms are other moorland wildflowers, which flower at the same time, making the heather season even more colourful.
