The 23rd China Shanghai International Arts Festival opened with the original dance drama ‘Azure After the Rain’ by the Shanghai Dance Theatre on October 17 at the Shanghai Cultural Square.
This dance drama portrays the life of Song Dynasty poet Li Qingzhao (1084-1155) by blending traditional Chinese aesthetics with modern sensibilities. It covers her affluent childhood, marriage, and the societal and familial changes she encountered in her later years. The choreography and stage design are dedicated to showcasing the aesthetic charm of Song Dynasty life.
Director of Shanghai Dance Theatre Wang Yan said through this work, they want to showcase the excellence of traditional Chinese culture and to bring it to the world, fully displaying the enduring charm and profound depth of our culture.
The dance drama will be performed at Shanghai Culture Square on Oct 19 and 20 as well.
This year's China Shanghai International Arts Festival has attracted nearly 5,000 artists from over 80 countries and regions, with over 300 events and nearly 1,000 performances and exhibitions planned. The festival runs until November 17.
