Dr. Stephen M. Edelson presents an overview of the history of autism, highlighting key milestones in research, interventions, and the development of support and funding organizations. It is important to note that this year marks the 100th anniversary of Dr. Grunya Sukhareva’s pioneering publication, which provided the first clinical description of autism.

Stephen M. Edelson, Ph.D., is the Chief Science Officer of the Autism Research Institute. Active in the field of autism for over 45 years, he began leading ARI in 2006, after the passing of autism pioneer and advocate, Dr. Bernard Rimland. Dr. Edelson played a key role in the early research on Applied Behavior Analysis (with Ivar Lovaas), nutrition and biomedical (with Bernard Rimland), and sensory interventions, such as sensory integration (with Lorna Jean King), vision training (with Melvin Kaplan), auditory integration (with Guy Berard), and deep pressure (with Temple Grandin).

Dr. Edelson has also consulted on two popular books on the history of autism, including John Donvan and Caren Zucker’s In a Different Key: The Story of Autism (nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for non-fiction, a film documentary to be released soon) and Steve Silberman’s NeuroTribes.
