This song is based on a true story. The scene opens at The Metropolitan downstairs bar on West Street. I was there to play the Wednesday open mic and sat down to order a Tanqueray on the rocks, no fruit. The guy next to me turned and said to his date, “that drink stinks”. Well, I couldn’t help myself when it arrived and said to him, as I raised my glass to him and his date, “you know, I like the way this tastes.” Whereupon they ordered another round of beers and moved to a booth.
After my set, I sat down to order my third and last for the evening, and before that glass could touch the bar, a hand reached from my left and pulled it away. I turned and looked and it was Chef Bobby Jones just getting off work and stopping in on the way home. He said to me, “Son, I can’t let you drink that. Let me order you a smooth one.”, and proceeded to order me a Botanist - on the rocks, no fruit - which he would not let me pay for. And yes, it was smooth.
There ain’t no “g” in Tanqueray it’s a “q”.
