“Was Susumu Ohno correct when in 1967 he said that gene duplication is the single most important factor in the evolution of the vertebrates? Most of the protein-coding genes among a broad range of organisms—including the nonprotein-coding DNA sequences that regulate the expression of those gene have evolved by this mechanism in the past 300 million years, and are responsible for the diversity of adaptations among not only vertebrates, but diverse species of plants and animals in general. We now know that the frequency at which entire, functional genes are duplicated is similar to the rate of point mutations.
