How to collect the Varmint Rifle - Red Dead Redemption 2

Finding the Varmint Rifle in the wild is a big deal. You can of course pick it up from the gunsmith, and even get the snakebite victim NPC to foot the bill. But John can’t buy from shops when working at Pronghorn Ranch. I thought finding this gun was hopeless, but then a search of old Reddit posts revealed this one NPC in the swamps near Lakay, who drops it.
This took a few reloads, from my camp near Hagen Orchards. Head to just east of the U in BAYOU on the map, then kill every alligator you see, like 6-7. This will keep them from spawning in the area for a while, and make it safe to collect the rifle from the water. Then kill yourself—I used oleander sage and dynamite. This will clear away the dead alligators when you respawn. Then just keep riding back and forth to the spot until the NPC spawns. Sometimes he spawns near a canoe, sometimes you’ll hear his scream but just find the canoe. This time it was just him, no canoe. His guns are underwater, so you will need eagle eye to spot them.
