Bruno Mattei (1931–2007) was an Italian filmmaker notorious for his prolific output of low-budget exploitation cinema, often released under pseudonyms like Vincent Dawn.
Born in Rome, he began his career in the 1950s as a sound editor and assistant director, working with masters such as Roberto Rossellini and Mario Bava. By the early 1970s he was directing his own films, quickly earning a reputation as the “Ed Wood of Italian genre cinema” for his shameless rip-offs of current Hollywood hits, shot on tiny budgets with stock footage, threadbare sets, and frequently recycled casts.
Operating primarily within the Filipino co-production circuit during the 1980s and 1990s, Mattei churned out dozens of violent, gory, and sexually explicit movies that shamelessly copied whatever was popular at the moment—whether zombie horrors, post-apocalyptic action, nunsploitation, women-in-prison dramas, or cannibal jungle adventures.
Despite near-universal critical disdain and frequent accusations of plagiarism, his films developed a cult following for their sheer audacity, nonstop pace, and gleeful bad taste.
Though he directed over fifty features, Mattei never achieved mainstream respectability and spent much of his later career making shot-on-video erotica and direct-to-video horror under a variety of aliases. He died of a brain tumor in 2007 while preparing yet another low-budget shocker.
His work remains a cornerstone of “so-bad-it’s-good” cinema, beloved by trash-movie aficionados for titles that often outdid their inspirations in sheer excess.
