His successor, Nicolás Maduro, constantly alludes to him to silence his opponents. For months, protests calling for his resignation have been met with repression, causing dozens of deaths. Venezuela, subject to sanctions from the USA and ridden with corruption, is bankrupt. Despite the country’s vast oil reserves, millions of Venezuelans suffer from hunger; the supermarkets are almost empty, food is sold at exorbitant prices, and hospitals are running out of medicine.
