Today's video, we are going to talk about Fancy Chicken, in which our featured breed in this episode are Malaysian Serama Bantams.

A quick information about the Malaysian Serama bantam, it is the smallest breed of chicken in the world, weighing less than 500g. They are only 15-25 centimetres tall and are the result of crossing Japanese bantams with Malaysian bantams.

They generally live to be around 7 years but can occasionally make it to 10 years of age. Feeding these chickens is pretty inexpensive; they will eat about 1lb of food per month. They need to eat crumbles or mash since the pellets are way too big for them.

Okay! Let's talk about their caging, most breeders and keepers used two types of cage. One is the round cage, which helps or promote more your serama a good stance and body posture, it also provide a well ventilated enclosure. On the other hand, the box type or cabinet cage which provides more security to our seramas. Because it is more close and the materials used for making a box cage is plywood or marine than the round cages that are purely metal screens. Only packing tapes provide barrier to your chicken in a round cage set up.

PRO'S & CON'S

ROUND CAGES
Pros; it is more easy to maintain, can be transfer anytime at fast rate. Well ventilated.

Cons; your chicken can easily catch colds due to it's design. Easy to access , means more prone to danger.

BOX CAGE/ CABINET TYPE
Pros; it is more secure

Cons; it needs more time to maintain, not too easy to move/transfer from one place to another.


My Opinion:

No matter what kind of cage or housing we used for our Seramas, it doesn't matter at all. What matters most, is this. Make sure to always maintain the cleanliness of your cages/enclosure to prevent bacterial infections or any unwanted deceases that our Seramas may suffer.
