Opened on September 22, 1990, Wheaton Station hosts the longest single-span escalators in the Western Hemisphere. The escalators measure 230 feet (70 meters) long, and rise 115 feet (35 meters) at a 30-degree angle. The station is ADA-accessible, though it lacks a secondary elevator to back up its primary lift. The station also connects to Westfield Wheaton mall via a pedestrian bridge, and offers Park & Ride daily parking, Kiss & Ride hourly parking, and bus connections.
Wheaton is one of three twin-bore stations in the Metrorail system, along with Forest Glen and technically Fort Totten’s lower level. The platform is more than 120 feet (37 meters) below ground, making it the second-deepest station in the Metro system, after nearby Forest Glen. The area is hilly as f*ck, so engineers had to use pressurized tunneling instead of the usual cut-and-cover to carve through bedrock. As such, engineers used a twin-bore design instead of a single vault, which also explains why the escalators stretch so far underground.
URGENT rule of thumb: on the escalators, the right side is for standing, the left side is for passing.
