We visited Ashby de la Zouch Castle in Leicestershire on 22nd February 2023. The castle ruins include The Great Tower which remains accessible despite suffering damage during the Civil War ( 1642 - 1651 ) and it gives spectacular views from the top. There is also an underground tunnel from the Tower to the kitchen which is believed to date back to the Civil War.
The castle was built by William, Lord Hastings after 1473 on the site of an older Manor House.
The castle was featured in Walter Scotts novel Ivanhoe in 1819.
