I look at the social construction of emotions through two famous anthropologist accounts - Jean Briggs's study of the Utku Inuits, Never in Anger; and Catherine Lutz's account of the emotion fago on the Ifaluk Atoll in her book, Unnatural Emotions. Both are paradigmatic of an era of social construction in anthropology that influenced thought across disciplines. Today this continues in the work of Lisa Barrett who in How Emotions Are Made argues for a psychological constructionist account of emotions.
