The Original Launch (September 2013)
Platforms: PS3 and Xbox 360.

The Milestone: It cost roughly $265 million to develop and market, making it the most expensive game ever made at the time. It made $1 billion in just three days.

GTA Online: Launched two weeks after the main game. It was notoriously broken at launch, with massive server crashes that lasted for weeks.

The "Next-Gen" Jump (2014–2015)
As the PS4 and Xbox One arrived, Rockstar realized the game had more life in it.

The planned story DLC assets were eventually #4k #chromatix #enhancededition repurposed into Online updates like The Doomsday Heist.

The "Green vs. Purple" Alien War: A player-led historical event in 2020 where thousands of players dressed as aliens to fight in the streets, proving the game's cultural staying power even without new story content.
5. The "Expanded & Enhanced" Era (2022–Present)
In March 2022, the game jumped to its third generation (PS5/Xbox Series X|S).

This release was initially mocked by the community (the infamous "Why did they move the yellow license plate?" meme), as many felt the visual upgrades were too subtle.
However, the introduction of GTA+ (a subscription service) and Hao’s Special Works marked a clear shift in Rockstar’s strategy to treat GTA V as a "Platform" rather than just a game.
