In this lesson, I take a simple guitar lick through 8 levels of changes from very simple to advanced.
Exploring different ways of creating variations on a lick like this is a great way to practice improvisation and soloing. After practising making changes to a lick in this way for a while, it will naturally show up in your improvised solos.
All these examples are played over the first bars of a blues in A.
To create these changes, I use among other things, motivic development techniques. I start out using only the pentatonic scale, but after a few levels, I start using both chromatic notes and other scales.
Many of the techniques I use to create the variations in this lesson are found in my book "Improvising with Motives":
-In levels 2 and 3, I use creative repetition.
-In levels 4, 5, 6, and 7, I use approach notes.
-In level 5, I use inversion.
-In levels 6, 7 and 8, I use sequencing.

I used a drum loop from Yurt Rock to create the backing track. Every other sound apart from the drums is recorded with a Heritage 535 guitar or a Warmoth tele style guitar into a Fractal Fm3 amp modeller. I used a Fender Vibrolux model on the Fm3 with a JHS Morning Glory in front.
