Just imagine… the medicine a patient takes hoping to recover turns out to be fake.”
Delhi Police has busted a massive inter-state racket involving counterfeit and life-saving medicines worth crores of rupees. The Crime Branch has arrested four accused who were allegedly stealing government-supplied medicines, changing their labels, manufacturing fake life-saving drugs, and selling them across several states. Police said the racket was worth nearly Rs 6 crore and posed a serious threat to public health.
According to investigators, the Crime Branch’s Eastern Range-I team received secret information on April 22, 2026, about a gang operating from Delhi’s Mukherjee Nagar area. The gang was allegedly involved in illegally diverting government hospital medicines into the open market. Acting on the tip-off, the Crime Branch, along with officials from the Drugs Control Department, conducted a raid at a building in Indra Vikas Colony, Mukherjee Nagar. What they found inside shocked even the officers. A hidden manufacturing and repackaging unit was operating on the second floor, filled with medicines, packaging material, fake labels, and sealing machines.
During the raid, police arrested 56-year-old Manoj Kumar Jain, who has been identified as the kingpin of the entire operation. Investigators revealed that Jain was earlier involved in the construction business, but after suffering losses, he entered the illegal medicine trade. He allegedly purchased medicines meant exclusively for government hospitals, removed their original labels, and replaced them with fake commercial labels before selling them in the market. Police also found evidence suggesting that some critical life-saving drugs were being illegally manufactured inside the Mukherjee Nagar unit itself.
The second major accused, Raju Kumar Mishra, was arrested from Panchkula, Haryana. During interrogation, he told police that he had started a mask and gloves business during the COVID-19 pandemic and later entered the pharmaceutical trade. Police said he set up a fake Human Albumin manufacturing unit in Derabassi, Punjab. Meanwhile, two other accused — Vikram Singh alias Sunny and Vatan — were arrested from Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh. Vikram is reportedly a lab technician who had regular access to government hospitals. According to police, he noticed that many government medicines remained unused and later started illegally supplying them to the racket.
Investigators said the gang sourced medicines from Karshan Hospital, Saidabad CHC, and Golak CHC in Prayagraj through illegal channels. These medicines were then transported to Delhi, relabeled, repackaged, and sold as genuine products. The network was not limited to Delhi alone. Police said the fake medicines were distributed in Kolkata, Guwahati, Imphal, and several northeastern states. Authorities also suspect that hawala channels were used for financial transactions linked to the illegal trade.
During the operation, police recovered huge quantities of suspected counterfeit medicines, including Rabies Vaccines, Insulin cartridges, Hepatitis-B Vaccines, Human Albumin, Snake Venom Antiserum, Azithromycin, Amoxyclav, and even cancer treatment drugs. Four packaging and labeling machines along with fake packaging material were also seized from the spot.
Police officials said the racket was extremely dangerous because the medicines involved were directly linked to saving lives. Fake insulin, fake rabies vaccines, or counterfeit Human Albumin could prove fatal for patients. Investigators believe thousands of unsuspecting patients may have been exposed to these dangerous drugs. Poor patients depending on government healthcare services were among the biggest victims of this fraud.
Delhi Police has registered FIR No. 102/2026 in the matter, and all four accused are currently in custody. Officials say further investigation is underway and more arrests are likely. Agencies are now trying to trace how far these fake medicines had spread and who else was connected to the network.
