Summary:
Undisturbed samples are taken with thin-walled tube sampler for soft to very soft soil depending on the SPT N value. Meanwhile, undisturbed core samples from stiffer cohesive soil are obtained by using mazier core barrel, a double-tube swivel type retractor barrel.
When coring in harder materials, the spring loaded inner tube comes under pressure and the inner tube retracts, so now the core lifter case assumes a normal position. A PVC coreliner is used inside the inner tube to retain the core, and a “basket” catcher can be used to prevent soft materials from slipping out.
