The Ruska Roma, also known as Russian Gypsies or Xaladitka Roma, are the largest subgroup of Romani people in Russia and Belarus. Initially known as Ruska Roma, they live mostly in Russia and Belarus, but also in Eastern and Central Ukraine, the United States, France, and Canada12. These Romani people have a rich cultural heritage, and their language, Ruska Romani, contains Russian, Polish, and German words, along with some Russian and Ukrainian grammar. Most Ruska Roma adhere to the Russian Orthodox faith13. Historically, they engaged in entertainment, music, and fortune-telling, and during the 19th century, Romani choirs formed by Russian Roma became popular among urban populations. However, a significant change occurred in 1956 when a Soviet government decree banned them from their nomadic lifestyle, leading to their settlement in houses and flats14. Notable individuals include Nikolai Shishkin, Valentina Ponomaryova, and Timofey Prokofiev1. If you’re interested in learning more about their culture, music, and history, consider exploring their vibrant traditions!
Russian Romani dance is characterized by gradual speed-up of music and movements. Female dancers incorporate wide hand waves with their skirts and shoulder shakes, while male dancers traditionally perform complex tap dance and engage in rhythmic patting of knees, shoulders, and hips12. These vibrant and expressive Gypsy dances have a rich history and are influenced by Russian ballet and character dancing. If you’re interested in experiencing Romani dance, you can explore performances like:
Swan Lake in the Bolshoi Theatre (2002): A captivating Russian dance performance with whirlwind spins and flamboyant skirt flourishes3.
Schachlo’s Russian Gypsy Dance: A lively and expressive dance originating from Ottoman military bands and later adopted by Roma in the Balkans4.
“Lumba La” by RiO RomanesE and Ruslanov Sisters: A cheerful story about bikers and Gypsies, featuring beautiful Gypsy music, songs, and dances5.
Feel free to explore these performances and immerse yourself in the world of Romani dance!
