Welcome to the Barrow Bookstore Audio Series. Join us today for a reading of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's "The Phantom Ship", a poem written about a real-life ghost ship of long ago. In January, 1647, a fully loaded trading ship set sail from New Haven,
Connecticut, bound for England. 18 months passed with no word of the ship. One June day, the worried citizens of New Haven spotted the missing ship on the horizon. The ship rose on the waves, broke apart, and vanished. Was it real? Or a ghostly apparition sent to ease the minds of those longing to know what happened to the missing vessel and her crew?
Interesting related fact:
The owner of the ship was George Lamberton ("Master Lamberton" in the poem) was onboard when the vessel disappeared. At the time, the ship's Captain's last name was Turner.
Generations later, in 1979, Lamberton's 12th-great-grandson married Captain Turner's 9th-great-grandaughter.
