Indian killed in Strait of Hormuz tanker attack; India summons Iranian diplomats

Описание: An Indian sailor was killed and six other Indian nationals were injured after two United Arab Emirates (UAE) oil tankers were struck by Iranian cruise missiles while transiting the southern passage of the Strait of Hormuz in Omani territorial waters on Tuesday. The attack targeted the tankers Mombasa and Al Bahiyah, leaving one crew member dead, eight people injured in total — including two Ukrainian nationals — and causing fires and damage to both vessels, which were later brought under control.

Following the attack, India summoned Iranian diplomats, including Deputy Chief of Mission Mohammad Javad Hosseini, to convey its concerns. The Ministry of External Affairs acted after the strike claimed the life of an Indian seafarer and injured several others. The Indian Embassy in the UAE expressed condolences to the bereaved family and said it was in contact with local authorities to provide assistance to the injured and affected families.

The UAE Ministry of Defence strongly condemned the attack, calling it a serious violation of international law and a threat to regional security and stability. It said the country reserved the right to respond and would take all necessary measures to safeguard its territory, people and strategic assets, while urging the public to rely only on official information.

The incident comes amid escalating regional tensions, with Iran reportedly targeting US-linked military facilities across the Gulf following recent US strikes. The latest attack on commercial vessels has heightened concerns over the security of shipping through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.
