Aleksandr Scriabin - Symphonic Poem in D minor (audio + sheet music)

Описание: The artistic movement of Symbolism had particular force around the turn of the century in Paris and St. Petersburg. Recalled Igor Stravinsky, it was the "...age of Symbolism, and in Russia [Scriabin] and Konstantin Bal'mont [a poet] were its gods." (In the next decade, Scriabin, taking seriously the fact that he was born on Christmas Day, came perilously close to believing that he actually was a divine being. However, in the previous decade he was a composer in search of a style to call his own.

He had begun by being the closest thing, musically, to Frédéric Chopin, writing piano music almost exclusively, primarily in shorter forms. He began this work, which he called "Symphonic Allegro" in 1896, possibly intending to compose a symphony. It was his first attempt at orchestral music, and he gave up on it during the next year.

In 1949 a Ukrainian musicologist and composer, Alexander Gauk (already famous for having rescued the previously lost First Symphony of Rachmaninov) completed the Symphonic allegro from Skyabin's sketches, titling the work "Symphonic poem in d minor."

Its value is primarily in what it tells us about the state of Scriabin's development at the time. It is undistinguished in its melodic content and loose in structure. Unless Gauk was unduly conservative when it came to orchestration, it show that Scriabin was not yet thinking boldly in terms of the orchestra. Among its most interesting features is the opening bass line, which anticipates that of the Third Symphony. It is mostly of interest to the major fan of Scriabin's music.
