Forte Garda, a silent sentry on Lake Garda

Описание: In this video, we’ll take you along with us to explore an Austro-Hungarian mountain fortification, designed to defend the entire Alto Garda system. Thanks to its innovative design, it became a model for later fortifications on the plateaus of Folgaria and Lavarone. Built between 1904 and 1907, Forte Garda served both offensive and defensive purposes: it was equipped with four 10 cm M99 howitzers mounted in armored turrets that could rotate 360°, allowing them to strike any target within an 8.5 km range. For close combat, it had two 8 cm M05 rapid-fire cannons, three 8 mm M07 machine guns, and shielded rifle ports. On the roof of the fort, there was an armored observation turret, while a long tunnel extended from the rear moat, leading to spaces used as water cisterns, defensive positions, and observation points overlooking the rocky cliffs of Mount Brione. The fort was also equipped with a powerful retractable searchlight. Inside, we can see the rooms designed to meet the needs of a garrison of 150-200 men, including a small morgue.
