Cilmeri is the site of the death of Llywelyn ap Gruffydd, the last native prince of Wales. The circumstances of his death are unclear beyond the fact that he was with a small group who on 11 December 1282 encountered soldiers from Edward I army and was killed in the skirmish. It wasn't until 1906 that the site was marked and in 1956 the present stone fron Snowdonia was erected with 13 oak trees to represent the 13 traditional counties of Wales.
The site sits beside the road through the village of Cilmeri and a railway station is conveniently close by on the appropriately, if unintentionally, named 'Heart of Wales' line.
