I went to Tamil Nadu to see the Meenakshi Amman Temple in Madurai, only to find it covered in green nets and bamboo scaffolding. But what looked like a "ruined holiday" turned out to be the secret to why this city has survived for over 2,500 years.
In this episode, we go beyond the backpacking trail to uncover the engineering, history, and "biological" architecture of the Lotus City. From the devastating 14th-century attacks by the Delhi Sultanate to the "butter" paste that holds the sanctum together, this is the story of how Madurai refuses to die.
We explore the Thirumalai Nayak Palace, the geometry of the "Lotus" street grid, and why Hindu culture celebrates the "surgery" of restoration (Jeernodharana) more than the scars of the past.
