A shocking case has emerged from Delhi that has left many surprised. People usually look to the police for protection and justice, but in this case, the alleged victims were police personnel themselves. Even more startling is that a practicing woman advocate has been accused of being part of a well-organized blackmail and extortion syndicate.
The Anti-Robbery & Snatching Cell (ARSC) of the Delhi Police Crime Branch has arrested advocate Surekha Rani in connection with an organized extortion racket. Surekha Rani, a resident of West Ghonda in Bhajanpura and a practicing lawyer at Karkardooma Courts, is accused of working alongside her husband, alleged kingpin Rajkumar alias Raju Meena, in targeting police personnel and government officials.
According to investigators, this was not a small-scale operation. Police claim the syndicate had been active for several years and followed a carefully planned method. The gang allegedly targeted on-duty traffic police personnel. Members of the group would first encourage officers to accept small amounts of money in order to avoid issuing traffic challans.
The officers were then secretly recorded using hidden cameras and mobile phones. Investigators allege that the videos were later edited and manipulated to create damaging content. The gang would then threaten the victims with suspension, departmental inquiries, vigilance investigations, false complaints, or public humiliation on social media unless they paid money.
Police say several police personnel and government employees allegedly fell victim to this blackmail scheme.
The investigation also uncovered what authorities describe as a massive network of assets built using proceeds of crime. A detailed financial probe reportedly revealed movable and immovable assets worth more than ₹10 crore. These include residential and commercial properties, bank deposits, vehicles, and other investments.
According to the Crime Branch, a significant portion of these assets was allegedly purchased in the name of Surekha Rani. Based on the evidence collected, she was arrested under the provisions of the Maharashtra Control of Organized Crime Act (MCOCA). Investigators believe she acted as a beneficiary and custodian of assets allegedly generated through the syndicate's criminal activities.
So far, five people have been arrested in the case. They include alleged gang leader Rajkumar alias Raju Meena, his close associate Mukesh Kumar alias Pakodi, Sanjay Gupta, Jeeshan Ali, and Surekha Rani.
Delhi Police has filed a charge sheet exceeding 3,000 pages before the designated MCOCA court in Saket. The prosecution case is based on witness statements, digital evidence, bank records, financial transactions, and other documentary evidence collected during the investigation.
Police officials say the investigation is still ongoing. Authorities are continuing to examine the role of other associates and trace additional assets allegedly linked to the syndicate's operations. Investigators describe the case as more than just an extortion racket, calling it an organized criminal network that allegedly sought to exploit fear, influence, and manipulation for financial gain.
Perhaps the most troubling aspect of the case is the allegation that individuals with knowledge of the legal system used that knowledge to intimidate and extort the very people responsible for enforcing the law. As Delhi Police continues to unravel the network, the case has raised serious questions about the misuse of legal processes and the lengths to which organized crime can go in pursuit of illegal profits.
