These hand-burnished guitar picks by Dunlop are something Lucas has had an interesting relationship with over the past couple years. Initially he didn't like them, as he found their large triangle shape to be too much of a jumping off point from his old favourite (The Jazz 2), which is a small tear drop style. Gradually though he started using them, particularly on acoustic guitar, and came to love the fact that they don't wear down quickly at all, as they are made from Altex, and feature beveled edges. Lucas also loves the sound of these picks on acoustic in particular. Being a large triangle, Lucas finds them easier to palm, than the standard small Ibanez PJTC1 picks that have become his go to these days for many applications. For this reason, he always caries a Primetone in his pocket, along with a few other types of picks, as sometimes these just sound and feel perfect for the job.
Are these more expensive than a standard guitar pick? Yes. At a price of about $2.91 (CDN) per pick right now.
Do they wear down as quickly? Absolutely not! Lucas is still using one of the original Primetones he purchased in 2019, and with the exception of the lettering being worn off, the pick shows barely any wear.
Are they worth it? In Lucas's opinion yes they are, as they have a distinctive slightly brighter, yet still round and warm tone all their own, when compared to nylon or celluloid picks. This, along with the longevity factor make them worth it for him. So long as you can deal with the larger triangle shape, they make a nice addition to one's pick collection.
Lucas favors the 1.5 mil (mistakenly named 2 mil in the video) large triangle, but these Primetones come in a large variety of shapes and sizes.
