THE SCIENCE
Ebolaviruses cause severe hemorrhagic disease by targeting vascular
endothelial cells and suppressing the innate immune response. Critically,
ebolaviruses are transmitted only through direct contact with infected
bodily fluids — not via respiratory aerosols — and individuals are not
infectious during the incubation period before symptom onset. This
contrasts sharply with SARS-CoV-2, which featured significant
presymptomatic and airborne transmission, the key factors enabling
pandemic spread. These transmission characteristics make Ebola amenable
to containment through isolation and contact tracing.
