So what do great managers do differently? I'm going to really unpack the traits, the knowledge, the behaviours that really unlock the potential in
your people, and drive high performance.
Hi, welcome to the Let's Talk Talent channel where we discuss the world of HR and talent management. We're here to help you unlock the potential in your people.
We all know the old adage that people don't leave organisations, they leave bad managers, are you one of them? Well, here are the things that
you need to look out for. Because really and truthfully, if you want to get, keep and grow brilliant people, you need to avoid these traits in your managers.
So whether you're looking at this as an HRD, or as a manager, these are the things that you really need to avoid, and some of the things that I really try and instill in my team, and also when I'm working with organisations.
The first thing that we need to think about as a manager is: do we care? Now it's an overused word at the moment: care, empathy, compassion, but really, when the chips are down, whether you're going through change, or your team is going through something, or you're wanting to inspire
loyalty and stickability, really caring – beyond that person's role – about the person, is really, really critical.
I think the second is about being authentic. Do you say what you mean to say, do you walk the walk? Or do you just tell your team what they want to hear? Being authentic is something that kind of really drives me and motivates me. And I hope that that comes across with my team. It's something that you can really learn. But it's something that's ultimately
innate. So think about your voice, and what you want people to think, feel and do as a result of that.
The third is about communication. And I think that's really important. It's
not what you say, it's how you say it. And sometimes as managers, we have to say difficult things. So if you're trying to drive someone's performance to be even better, are you being honest? Are you being truthful? Are you saying it in the moment? But also, are you saying it to them, rather than whispering or being political outside of that team?
And the final one is that they listen. So of all the managers that I've worked with the great ones really listen. Because ultimately, we should be speaking less and listening more. What we don't want to do is micromanage; to tell. We want to communicate, we want to engage with our people, and that sometimes isn't just about what we say, but how we listen and we give space for ideas for creativity, because ultimately,
that drives high performance.
And those are the traits that make a great manager. If you found this video helpful, please like and subscribe for more useful HR and talent management video content.
