What is mental math? Mental math is all about teaching the kids to do part of the mathematical equation they are dealing with in their heads instead of always depending on the writing technique.

Subtraction for kids is perceived as a little bit harder than addition, so coming up with some mental math methods to solve these subtraction problems is always important. In this educational video, the technique used is partitioning and removal.

Partitioning is the process of dividing the smaller number into tens and unites to make it easier to remove it from the bigger number but through a couple of needed steps. Kids should first understand that in subtraction, the smaller number is always taken and removed from the bigger number, so when it comes to partitioning and removal, the focus is always placed on the small number.

There are some steps that the child will need to go through in order to apply this partitioning and removal strategy to subtraction. First, the child will need to partition the smaller number only into tens and units, and then start the subtraction process by removing the tens from the bigger number then remove the units from the answer previously received.

Part of this method depends on mental math since the child will need to think about which one is the smaller number, the child will also consider removing the first part of the partitioned number from the bigger one and eventually come to the final mental part which is removing the tens from the received answer and this will sometimes need a little bit of focus, such as removing 9 from 56 and this will go through removing the 6 first to become 50 and then remove the rest of number 9 which is 3.

One of the important parts of educating the child is actually about teaching them different vocabulary words to understand what subtraction or to subtract means, this would include removing, taking away and minus.

You could first start with using the small numbers in general, for example not going bigger than number 50 in the whole equation, and when the child succeeds at making the right calculations and practice the whole thing, you could then move bigger with the numbers so that they start counting in their heads and fingers a little bit easier (   • Counting to 10 for Pre-schoolers and Kinde...  ).

Practicing is the most important part of the whole lesson. After the child practice this step and move forward with it, the parent should then focus a little bit more on teaching the child to learn subtraction and do some of the calculations in their heads and while using their fingers but without writing everything down all the time. This is important because the kids should know that mental math is also important and they need to use their mind in calculating and recognizing these calculations without placing them down on paper step by step.
