The London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham (one of the more up-scaled ones) 'boasts' 2 rings of bells. Un-coincidentally located in Hammersmith and.. Fulham. With the former unringable, this video will of course have no details of it at all. Fulham is our focus! Fulham is situated right at the Southern tip of the Borough, on a River Thames Meander, making it quite a tranquil ringing location. The fresh air, as well as distant sounds of marine activity both contribute to an ambient, relaxing atmosphere; contrary to the pollution-infested A219 road just next door.
The North Bank of the River Thames is full of 8 and 10 bell towers: some heavy, some light, some extremely characterful, and some unringable. When one attempts to pick a tower that matches all 4 of those characteristics, Fulham probably wouldn't be on their list. However, the ring of bells at Fulham can easily match at least some of that description. Being an 18cwt 10 in E flat, they aren't exactly light on the scales. Although if you compare that to towers such as Kensington and Rochester Row that are only a few miles away, they do feel quite little. Now where does the "character" come in? Well, they may not be particularly notable on paper, but listening to their sound does give off a sense of age. At least to me, they are in the perfect sweet spot where they aren't fresh, exactly in-tune strikes, yet still not disgusting to listen to.
This video was recorded on Saturday 19th November, the day of the MCALDG afternoon mini-outing. Following this, the ringers proceeded to Chelsea Old Church. However, I couldn't hang around as I had to get to Battersea for the Surrey Nomination Meeting! (beautiful picture on my twitter of that walk!). I did attempt to record at Battersea, however the video was out-of-sync, rendering it unusable :(. In this video, we hear the bells (and see me) ringing along to some Call Changes called by Colin Cherrett.
@1260stedders was also present at Fulham.
The next video will be of some Grandsire Caters at St Martin-in-the-Fields.
The Church of All Saints, Fulham, is affiliated to the North & East District (N&E) of the Middlesex County Association & London Diocesan Guild of Church Bell Ringers. (MCALDG)
