Construit sur le principe d'un funiculaire à contre-poids d'eau avec frein crémaillère, l'électrification n'interviendra que en 1982. Dès lors l'explosion du nombre de voyageurs transportés à nécessité par deux fois le remplacement des cabines. La configuration actuelle date de 2020.

Nach langen Verfahren wurde 1897 eine Standseilbahn zwischen den beiden Orten in Betrieb genommen. Von da an wurde der Bahnhof Penthalaz fälschlicherweise „Bahnhof Cossonay“ genannt. Das Dorf Penthalaz erhält seinen mit Cossonay verbundenen Stationsnamen erst 2014 zurück, nachdem die Bezirksgrenzen in dieser Region neu verteilt wurden.
Gebaut nach dem Prinzip einer Standseilbahn mit Gegengewicht aus Wasser und Zahnstangenbremse, erfolgte die Elektrifizierung erst 1982. Von da an machte die explosionsartige Zunahme der beförderten Passagierzahlen einen zweimaligen Austausch der Kabinen erforderlich. Die aktuelle Konfiguration stammt aus dem Jahr 2020.
