In this episode of "Fitness Facts," Dr. Trent Herda and I discuss the type of research conducted in the Neuromechanics Laboratory at the University of Kansas. Research in the lab is primarily focused on neuromuscular function and quantifying alterations in the composition of muscle (muscle size, intramuscular fat, etc.) as a result of resistance exercise training and, subsequently, the effects that changes in muscle composition may have on physical and metabolic performance. Isometric and isokinetic strength testing using a Biodex dynamometer is demonstrated, and neuromuscular activity is monitored during testing using surface electromyography (EMG). Muscle composition is also evaluated in this video via ultrasound of the vastus lateralis thigh muscle.
Timepoints & Topics Discussed in this Video:
0:00:05 - Introductions (Dr. Trent Herda)
0:00:27 - What type of research is conducted in the Neuromechanics Laboratory, and why is this research important?
0:05:08 - Isometric & isokinetic strength testing demonstration using the Biodex dynamometer combined with surface electromyography to monitor electrical activity in the quadriceps muscle
0:14:15 - Ultrasound demonstration to view the size and composition of the vastus lateralis (quadriceps muscle)
0:17:00 - Discussion of Dr. Herda's favorite studies conducted in the Neuromechanics Laboratory, and the results of those studies
0:19:03 - Future studies to be conducted in the lab
If you have specific questions about exercise science, kinesiology, sports performance enhancement, bodybuilding, nutrition, supplementation, training, exercise program design, exercise technique, injury prevention, rehabilitation, etc., leave a comment below and I will try my best to produce a video over the topic in the future!
